This late 19th-century flat-top steamer trunk is an elegant example of Victorian travel craftsmanship, made by Nicholas Cook of Chicago, as noted by the original maker’s plaque reading “Nicholas Cook, Maker, 169 State St., Palmer House, Chicago.” Constructed from solid pine with decorative black embossed metal accents and reinforced wooden slats, the trunk is both durable and visually rich. The interior features colorful lithographed paper with romantic and scenic imagery, and includes a lift-out tray with a hidden compartment—adding functionality and mystery. An additional historical note is a set of four original 2-cent U.S. stamps affixed inside.
