Fab Lab Door Specialist
Independent Contractor Position
Rebuilders Xchange (RBX) | Cleveland, Ohio
The Opportunity
Rebuilders Xchange is seeking a skilled, hands-on craftsperson to become our resident door specialist—repairing, restoring, and refinishing salvaged architectural doors and helping give them a second life. This is a 1099 independent contractor position offering flexibility and the opportunity to build a unique specialty within Cleveland's architectural salvage and preservation community.
Every week, beautiful old doors pass through our Fab Lab: solid wood construction, historic joinery, and decades of character. Many simply need the right person to see their potential. In this role, you'll evaluate each piece, determine the restoration approach, prepare project estimates, and bring these doors back to life for their next home. Over time, you'll take ownership of the entire restoration process and become our in-house expert on historic and reclaimed doors.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess salvaged doors and develop restoration plans and project estimates.
- Prepare accurate bids for restoration work when applicable.
- Repair structural issues, damaged joinery, and worn surfaces.
- Strip, sand, stain, paint, and apply protective finishes.
- Restore and prepare doors for resale and installation.
- Maintain quality standards and organized workflows within the Fab Lab.
- Manage your workload to ensure projects are completed on schedule.
- Collaborate with the RBX team to preserve historic materials and craftsmanship.
- Continuously develop expertise in historic door construction, materials, and restoration techniques.
What We're Looking For
You may be a great fit if you:
- Have experience in finish carpentry, cabinetmaking, furniture refinishing, millwork, historic window restoration, or related woodworking trades.
- Enjoy working with reclaimed materials and take pride in repairing items others might discard.
- Have experience with wood repair and finishing techniques—or a strong desire to learn and master them.
- Are dependable, self-directed, and comfortable managing projects independently.
- Have experience preparing project estimates and bidding work.
- Possess strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to complete projects in a timely manner.
- Appreciate craftsmanship, problem-solving, and preserving historic materials.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in any of the following is a plus, but not required:
- Historic preservation or restoration work.
- Door hardware installation and repair.
- Mortise-and-tenon joinery.
- Veneer creation and repair.
- Glass replacement or restoration.
- Custom woodworking and fabrication.

Contractor Details
- Independent contractor (1099) position.
- Flexible scheduling based on project workflow and shop needs.
- Compensation based on experience and scope of work.
- Contractors are responsible for maintaining their own general liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage.
- Contractor is expected to provide accurate bids, manage projects independently, and meet agreed-upon timelines.
