Description :
This monumental statue of Saint Peter was originally installed on the exterior façade of St. Peter Church (Kirche St. Peter) in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Founded in 1853, the parish served Cleveland’s early German Catholic community and stood at the intersection of Superior Avenue and East 17th Street. Historical documentation shows this sculpture mounted within the Gothic niche above the main entrance of the church, where it served as an architectural devotional figure welcoming parishioners and visitors. A surviving 1984 archival photograph confirms the statue in its original placement on the church façade.
The sculpture depicts Saint Peter holding the keys of heaven and a book, traditional symbols representing his role as the first pope and keeper of the Church’s authority. Cast in fiberglass with a stone-like finish, the statue was designed to replicate carved stone while remaining light enough for exterior architectural mounting. At 115 inches tall, the piece is monumental in scale and was engineered for outdoor installation, making it an exceptional example of ecclesiastical architectural ornamentation.
Architectural church statuary of this size rarely enters the secondary market, particularly with documented provenance tying it to a specific historic parish. The statue retains surface wear consistent with exterior installation and age, adding character to the piece and reinforcing its authenticity as salvaged religious architecture. Suitable for churches, institutions, landscape installations, collectors of religious artifacts, or architectural restoration projects.
