This antique backplate is from Reading Hardware Co.’s "Clifton" pattern, patented in 1911. Made from wrought bronze, this example has been later painted, though the ornate scrollwork and deeply cast Gothic-inspired motifs remain visible beneath the surface. The plate includes a standard knob spindle and keyhole cutout, fitting most mortise lock applications. These plates are prized for their weight, intricate detailing, and historical significance.
