Meade & Hamilton | Cleveland’s Golden Age of Craftsmanship

The Haysmar Estate emerged during one of Cleveland’s most remarkable periods of growth — a time when architects, artisans, millworkers, and skilled tradespeople came together to create homes with an extraordinary level of craftsmanship, and character.

Commissioned by Kaufman Hays and completed in 1913, the Haysmar compound was designed by the distinguished architectural firm Meade & Hamilton during what historians often describe as the golden age of the American suburban estate.

Frank B. Meade was not simply another architect designing large homes for wealthy Cleveland families. He trained during a transformative period in American architecture, studying in Boston before working in the Chicago office of William LeBaron Jenney — the pioneering architect widely regarded as the father of the modern skyscraper. Meade later worked under prominent Cleveland architect Abram Garfield before forming the influential Meade & Hamilton partnership in 1911.

Their work reflected an era when homes were built slowly, intentionally, and with extraordinary attention to detail. The residences designed by Meade & Hamilton throughout Bratenahl and along Lake Shore Boulevard embodied a philosophy of permanence — layered compositions of proportion, craftsmanship, imported materials, regional millwork, and artisan construction techniques rarely seen today.

The woodwork inside homes of this caliber was often produced by specialized regional mill shops working with old-growth hardwoods harvested decades — sometimes centuries — before construction. Trim profiles were custom milled specifically for the home rather than ordered from catalogs. Cabinetry was assembled by joiners and finish carpenters using furniture-making techniques. Plaster walls were hand-applied over wood lath. Doors were solid, weighty, and built to endure generations of use.

The result was architecture you could feel.

Though the names of the individual carpenters, plasterers, cabinetmakers, and millworkers who physically built the Haysmar homes remain largely undocumented — as was common at the time — their work survives as a living signature embedded throughout the structure itself.

Every layer of craftsmanship still visible beneath a century of use.

Today, one home from this historic compound has reached the end of its structural life as a standing residence. Rather than allowing these materials to disappear into a landfill, RBX is carefully preserving and releasing architectural elements from the estate piece by piece — doors, hardware, lighting, cabinetry, millwork, fixtures, flooring, and countless details impossible to authentically recreate today.
